Appearance
All Ceramic crowns are metal free crowns which make them look like natural teeth. In metal ceramic crown, to mask the metal visibility usually an opaque layer of porcelain is added in the laboratory where the crown is prepared. This opaque layer makes the crown look extra white when compared to the desired natural tooth color. Furthermore, in metal ceramic crowns, metal exposure can be seen along the gumlines which is more pronounced with time.
Durability
Historically, Metal ceramic crowns are more durable than all-ceramic crowns because of strong metal layer underneath the ceramic layer. However, recently advanced technologies have brought Zirconia all-ceramic crowns which are as equally durable as metal ceramic crowns.
Long Term care
As you chew ice or hard candies or for those with bruxism or grinding habits ceramic layer coated on the metal can fracture, exposing the metal layer underneath. This issue is not seen in the all-ceramic crown.
At Karpagam Dental Care we provide both Metal ceramic and all-ceramic crowns. However, we prefer to choose all-ceramic crowns for various above-mentioned reasons and advantages of it. Two majorly used all-ceramic crowns are Zirconia and e.max, both of which are prescribed depending upon individual scenarios
